2023 – a year to remember!

As we wave goodbye to 2023, we thought we’d share a few highlights from what has been a busy and exciting past year here at Whalesborough.

As seen on TV…

Across our 5-star holiday resort, we are committed to sustainability in all that we do. For us, everything needs to be set in the context of minimising our impact on the environment and enhancing the wildlife within it. It’s all part of our sustainability commitment and our target to reach net zero by 2025.

So, when we heard about Bude-based Cleaner Seas Group’s ground-breaking microfibre filters – which can be fitted to washing machines to prevent over 700,000 microfibres from entering our seas and rivers every single each wash – we leapt at the opportunity to install them.

Now, all our luxury cottages and barns have filters fitted, and this year, we’ll be adding industrial versions to our commercial washing machines for the spa, restaurant and gym too. So, the next time you visit, you’ll be able to wash your clothes safe in the knowledge that you’re using a machine that’s helping to save the planet, one wash at a time.

This captured the imagination of the media, and in December we were thrilled to welcome BBC Spotlight, and ITV West Country to delve into the difference that the filters are making on site. Capturing microfibres down to one micron, which is five times smaller than the tip of a needle, we were able to explain how we’re protecting the health of our ecosystem, marine life, and our customers by preventing these microfibres from entering the food chain. For us, it was a privilege to play our part in raising awareness of this amazing new technology, launched only in May.

If you’d like to know more about the domestic Indi™ washing machine filter and how it captures up to 91 million microfibers from the average household’s washing each year, why not hop on over to their site: https://www.cleaner-seas.com

I’m a celebrity, get me into Whalesborough

Last autumn, we invited Monty Halls and his family, including Luna the dog, to discover the magic of Whalesborough. As a former Royal Marines Officer turned marine biologist, journalist, and TV celebrity, Monty has starred in many TV series such as BBC2’s Great Escapes, and The Fisherman’s Apprentice.

Monty and family took the opportunity to immerse themselves in the full Whalesborough experience, learning all about our commitment to sustainability. This struck a particular chord with Monty having filmed his Generation Sea Change series featuring our good friends Cleaner Seas earlier in the year. He was particularly fascinated to find out all about what we’re doing to minimise the impact of holidays here in the UK.

Intrigued in hearing more about Monty’s experience? You can read his review piece here, or watch his short video here.

2023: the year of on-site changes, improvements, and developments

Last year we were busy making lots of exciting enhancements to our holiday resort. Our beautiful outdoor heated pool was refurbished and will now be kept at a constant 26°C from May through to September, meaning that you can indulge in outdoor swimming for longer.

Groundwork for our new eco-villas began, and the new sales office was also completed, giving guest an insight into how eco-villa life will feel. Do drop by if you’re passing by any time soon.

We also saw Whalesborough’s reception area transformed, and we had the opportunity to capture the beauty of both our pools and spa in pictures. What’s more, the Weir restaurant, located on-site, enjoyed regular makeovers to match the seasons.

Themed areas for the Weir restaurant came to life at Halloween and Christmas. Guests visiting over the October half term were immersed in ghoulish pumpkin displays, and spooky tricks and treats. In December, glittering Christmas trees, cosy nooks, and grand fireplaces took centre stage, bringing the magic of Christmas to life alongside hearty celebratory meals and mulled wine.

And, as always, we put on a host of complimentary events for our W-Club members and owners, including barbeques with live music. With more events planned for 2024, we look forward to welcoming you to the club.

Eco-villas in the news

Having achieved extensive coverage in Coast Magazine, The Sunday Times, The Western Morning News, and The Daily Mail, you may have been one of the thousands of readers to have seen pieces about our new luxury holiday eco-villas.

As a result, we’ve had huge interest them, and it’s no surprise that 70% have already sold. Luckily, it’s not too late to own your own glorious corner of Cornwall and one of our amazing eco-lodges.

There are now just three remaining, each of which comes with their own wildflower roof, exposed timber cladding, traditional Cornish stonework, private decking, al-fresco dining areas, a large, enclosed garden, and stunning countryside views – all with an earning potential of £80,000 a year.

If that piques your interest, why not find out more here? Our luxury eco-villas are due for completion in the early summer.
